New Blue Kid 03:46
NEW BLUE KID Shimmy shimmy hey hey don't look down New Blue Kid walk into the sunrise With your jellybean eyes. Tell me lies Lunar Head welcome to the corner With the 3d face. What a place Look at us now see how we run Oh the cyclones we go around in cyclones New Blue Kid walk into the ceiling when you're reeling With your headlights on. Count to one Lunar face igniting like the flashes of the lightning With the clouds in your head. Glide instead Look at us now see how we run Oh the cyclones we go around in cyclones New Blue Kid walk into the sunrise With your jellybean eyes. Tell me lies Lunar Head welcome to the corner With the 3d face. What a place Look at us now see how we run Oh the cyclones we go around in cyclones Shimmy shimmy hey hey don't look down

UNKINDEST CUT The thinnest dreams blossom in the spring They say they've thought of everything In her hands a discounted bouquet The cage is locked, no turning away She sees the violence in the hall She sees the unkindest cut of all Beneath the veil two wooden eyes Stare into the last surprise He shines his fists in anticipation The chains are gleaming for the consummation She sees the violence in the hall She sees the unkindest cut of all She sees the violence in the hall She sees the unkindest cut of all

LONGER THAN THE DAY Your sister says she doesn't want you here She thought she made it clear And now the rapping on the door Is louder than before It's longer than the day The thirteenth card told you what to do Nothing you could choose Now you sit staring at the blade It's longer than the day It's longer than the day Now you're pleased. Now you're appeased Inside you now the lion and the lamb Are in a traffic jam You look as though you need a rest Perhaps it's for the best It's longer than the day Now you're pleased. Now you're appeased. It's longer than the day.

The Circle 03:00
THE CIRCLE Bleeding tears today you might run too far Locked in the shouting away form your mother's car Watch out, watch out for every pair of eyes Come down join the circle Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow Come down join the circle Feel the grund explode as we corrode You should have seen that dero's face The teacher and the bell come and put you back into your place Too small for pain and nausea's prize Come down join the circle Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow Come down join the circle Feel the grund explode as we corrode Broken fingernails scratch at the wall Too far gone now to hear your mother's call The power shuts off and you realise Come down join the circle Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow Come down join the circle Feel the grund explode as we corrode

Susan Burn 04:06
SUSAN BURN Immortal wounds dissolve her pain She listens to the silent rain Formless in a rusty chain The silent world of Susan Burn Strains toward another turn The silent world of Susan Burn She walks until the edge of time A pride of lions comes to tea But she's dreaming of the sea The deepest place for charity The silent world of Susan Burn Strains toward another turn The silent world of Susan Burn She walks until the edge of time Surrender is her final plan She builds her cages in the sand No hope for the superman The silent world of Susan Burn Strains toward another turn The silent world of Susan Burn She walks until the edge of time

13TH CHILDHOOD Swimming through my 13th childhood Headaches come and go like you should If there was a chance I could fall into another sleep One important day I'll make my mind up One cool day I'll make my mind up See if you can look the other way See if you can keep yourself away From a day Sulphuric dreams in my 13th childhood Faces burn like napalm on wood I don't talk talk costs too much, so expensive One important day I'll make my mind up One cool day I'll make my mind up See if you can look the other way See if you can keep yourself away From a day

ROOM ON THE EDGE In a room on the edge, second floor, I stare at the ceiling and listen for the door They're playing outside, cooking up fun Chasing goblins on the run Watch the bed grow twice its size A starving roach looks for a prize Come inside, come inside It's like walking through the rubble of Hiroshima In a room on the edge my vision's blurred Tell me a wish I've never heard In a room on the edge, through paper walls, I hear them laughing in the hall Watch the bed grow twice its size A starving roach looks for a prize Come inside, come inside It's like walking through the rubble of Hiroshima In a room on the edge... In a room on the edge there's broken glass And all the curtains are made of brass Watch the bed grow twice its size A starving roach looks for a prize Come inside, come inside It's like walking through the rubble of Hiroshima In my room on the edge.

KEEPER OF THE GATE Morning comes again with promises Sunshine on the lawn, unwelcome guest Shaving with your aging eyes, the mirror's lying Lies don't mean much, lies just grate He walks past but he never sees The keeper of the gate Into work into the clock whose hands don't move Same daydream of a man jumping off a roof Flirting won't pay cover your eyes Your coffee's gone cold Dreams don't mean much they're all too late He works for but he never sees The keeper of the gate Never ask questions about your fate Chasing every rumour for The keeper of the gate

Beat 225 01:44
BEAT 225 Go down to the place where heads shrink fast Look into someone else's past Switch on switch off see what gives Find yourself a disused relative On beat 225 Buy and sell you lifetime plans As long as money changes hands The ghostly dreams that haunt the bars Are locked away in chemical jars On beat 225 Well, you can never tell Where your depression ends The shape of all your friends Life, life in this beehive You might enjoy the drive On beat 225, Beat 225 Beat 225

Be Brave 05:17
BE BRAVE In a happy place we walk away we walk away In a tear stained face we look away we look away So blue Waves of faces of words No sound Words surround In a happy world there are no words, there are no words In a wordless world Behind a wall behind a wall No sound at all Waves of faces of faces Be brave Perpetually Be brave... etc ...

Dismantle 04:44
DISMANTLE Now there is no time. There is no form or space I feel like steel. I feel like a backwards chase I melt so well I dismantle Tables and chairs dance like flames. They laugh The cradle's burning. It laughs I burn so well I dismantle I live in a burning ocean I swim through sound and motion I sink so well I dismantle

about

This album is a group of songs. There's no overall theme to them, they are just the ones that were finished so they were the ones that went on the album. Well, there were more but these were either newer or better.

I have used fades at the tops and tails of these tracks rather than noise reduction. The source tape is noisy but its unnoticeable when the music starts. Noise reduction was altering the sound too much to use. And, hey, it's real!

Cosmic St is in the Brisbane suburb of Robertson. It's clean and affluent. We loved the idea of the mix and just the name alone. But when Greg and his brother Ian went looking for it they could only find Cosmos St. Ian took a photo of Greg sitting at the street sign pretending to play the trumpet. Greg traced the photo which became the cover art.

The overall style is 60s guitar pop which was the big M.O. at the time for anything melodic and independent. Other influences like baroque music or Indian classical also weave in there but neither of those in any way goes against the 60s grain. The only real difference between us and other bands that affected a 60s sound was that we tended not to copy the formula too closely. We didn't wear paisely nehru jackets on stage and we didn't take twenty minute guitar solos with lots of fuzz 'n' wah. We looked standard post punque and kept the guitar sound clean or acoustic. We thought we were being anti rock.

The Gatekeepers formed in 1983 around the duo of Peter Jetnikoff (me), and Greg Wadley. We'd met while in another band, The Pits, and I had some songs that we recorded on 4-track at the end of 1982. In early 1983, I came back to Brisbane from uni holidays and we filled out the personnel and recorded some of those songs. All of these apart from Be Brave (which is recorded on Ian's spiffy Walkman) were done on 8-track. We started playing and recorded the rest on this album in the second half of the year, mastered all of that and this is the result. We were better recording than playing live (like most other bands at our level, we sneered at "professionalism" and recruited friends rather than players) and kept recording in the years after. I'll put those up as I see fit in times to come.
