This is the first full recording of this song, though I've had it in some shape since about 1980. I always had the main chord riff and the opening line. At one point I had two verses and a chorus but didn't know what to put in the bits between them. The short instrumental came much later when Greg W and I attempted to record a version at his place on eight track in 1990. That was left without a vocal because I never liked the words.
An early version of the second verse used the title of a book in my childhood home library and I mixed it with a New Testament quote so it went: "In the school that I'd like there are many mansions...." My old problem was that while writing words with religious bent sounded good I had no belief so they always rang hollow. As there were still only scraps of it when I came to do this version I kept the chorus and the opening line only and scratched around for something else. Finally, I chose torture and religious conviction but it could have been about anything.
Well, now it's done.
