about

These recordings date from between 1982 to 1984, going from the first 4-track songs to the last ones done at Basement studio.

After departing The Pits I kept writing songs in the expectation of forming a band of my own. Fellow Pitter Greg Wadley encouraged this and engineered the use of Peter Cavallo's Tascam 4-track to put down as many as we could. We ended up with thirteen tracks.

No overdubs or bounce downs as we weren't equipped (literally and experentially) to do them. This meant that I had to put down my vocal and guitar first, a move fatal to keeping time as I was disasterously crap at it. Greg had to drum to a wavering tempo on every single track. This makes for grating listening, apart from anything else so only two of those make it here.

Songs from the following year, also done at Greg's parents' place, are all intended to be demos for more sophisticated recording. Those from the year after that are the same (done at Greg's place in Paddington). The last few are 8-track recordings from Basement. While the sound quality of these is much better they often suffered from being rushed and came off as more sterile than the home recordings.

The audio quality varies greatly and I have omitted a lot of material because of it is too low on the listenability scale. Other recordings have been omitted because they are too poorly performed. There are exceptions to this. Keeper of the Gate, for example sound like a song would sound if it could drink too much beer but the feel of the vocals and atmosphere make it stand up (however unsteadily).
