about

By 1985 the band had long since ceased to exist as a unit in any sense outside of memory. I was still writing songs but with no concrete intentions for them. I bumped into Greg at a cinema and asked him if he'd be interested in playing some recordings and he was enthusiastic. I then asked Pat Ridgewell if we could use his 4-track reel to reel for some recording and also him for some engineering. He said yes.

The days spent recording there were in both seasons very bright and fresh. I can remember them fondly without resorting to nostalgia.

These songs were done over two blocks. One in autumn and the other toward the end of winter. Some of them were years old by the time we recorded them. The second round of recordings were done in the knowledge that I was about to move to Melbourne and wanted to clear out all the unfinished or nearly finished numbers still left unrecorded. That's Afternoons to Castaways.

These were all done at Pat's house at Oxford Tce, Taringa in Brisbane and apart from Greg's bass and my acoustic were played on his instruments. Of note were some fine old Burns electrics, I think a Bison or Hank Marvin and a Double Six (12 string). NB - recent communication with Pat has corrected this last item. He remembers it was a Maton 12 string (which he wishes he still had). Oh, and a string machine keyboard that belonged to Mark Zervoudakis. And the organ was probably Pat's Casio.

Thanks to Pat Ridgewell the sound quality on these recordings was the highest we'd yet achieved with 4-track (though tape deterioration on the cassettes I took them from has taken its toll here and there). He was patient, supportive and knowledgeable.

Thanks also, to Greg for being so supportive during the recording and helping me get these things done in time. Probably wouldn't have happened without him.
