SLASHER VICTIM
I paid for petrol at Mackay. He hadn’t been for years.
So he bought a rusty Holden and took the highway north.
He ached for the connection, the photographs and tears
We gazed into the white line saw his origins come forth.
A motel, edge of Townsville, slow from heat and rum,
He’d dive there round the wrecks, one of those girl’s name bays
The glasses beaded, ice cubes melted, I was getting numb
With his parents gone he was alone, valuing his days
And he looked across as the road flew by and said
Don’t you ever feel that way yourself?
And I said
When I was a slasher victim, in that demographic
When I felt like every day was playing in the traffic
Through frustration, isolation, ostracism I’ll not return
To the screaming lightless darkness of that state
Cassowaries crossed the road in style at Bingil Bay,,m,,,
At the gate he said the heat pulled him along
I left him on a pile of toys, they’d kept his room that way
Took what I could use and moved myself along
I found my way to Brisbane the light and air were dead
Went past our old house, couldn’t feel a thing
The noise and pain had gone, nothing worse instead.
No agony or screams. Someone else’s bins
And his question in my ears kept pounding in my head
Did I never feel the way he’d felt myself?
And I said
When I was a slasher victim, chasing final girls
When the human jungle came alive with psychotropic swirls
Of all the ages I have been I must at last return
To the screaming lightless prison of my youth

SUNSET
To all the light that cleans the air
To all the air that cleans the day
To all the strength of living clay
To the silence masking centuries I pray
I raise my eyes and pray
One by one the stars appear
One by one they fall
One by one the stars appear
One by one they fall
All our mistakes are gathered there
They're piled up in the compound
Each jutting spine and whitened eye
Every dry and gaping mouth will testify
With silence and with pain
One by one the stars appear
One by one they fall
One by one the stars appear
One by one they fall
