I went back to Townsville for the Christmas holidays at the end of first year and saw a picture in the paper of a girl I used to have a crush on until she (unaware of it) crushed me by showing her her engagement ring at a party. I plunged into an adolescent rage and started writing this but the more I wrote it the less I wanted anything bad to really happen to her and out of guilt finished the song as a kind of eulogy. Confused? Yes. The photo caption read Debbie is a Beach Girl. The tense change says it all.
