Renaissance courtly dances were the IDM of their time being formally constrained and intended for lengthy performance. To my ear they have a grimness typical of the fatalism of the era, a kind of musical Breughel painting. The French lines are there as a tip of the hat to some of my favourite basse danses and pavanes which seem mostly to be French.
This was planted as an instrumental for the album Haunting the Path but it grew into a song. The album version will be based on this but less of a rumble.
