about

Part of trying to be anti-rockist in the early 80s meant that you also affected to like either funk or jazz or both. I still can't stand funk and though I grew to admire some jazz at the time the only type I could stand was the strident ragtime of Brecht and Weill. This was an attempt at something in the same neighbourhood. It might have simply been an excuse to use Greg's defretted bass and my steel slide on the Flamingo.

This was in almost every set we played as a Brisbane band. It was there for inclusion in the Cosmic St album but not even recorded, though it was well liked. We played it live very loosely, taking solos here or letting the bass riff vamp on or whatever. It might have seemed a long and costly thing to try in a recording studio. No version of it was recorded outside of a live context and then when the band boiled down to two the following year we were doing mostly new material.

The extended verses date from a project in the last ten years called Ghost Town which was meant to be a noirish live radio serial. It's not pure but it's better and in its own way carries the same kind of history.

That's the Maton Flamingo playing the slide part, by the way. There is some very dodgy intonation which I haven't fixed up through either pitch correction or re-recording as it's pretty much how the part would have sounded live and I've since followed the original owner of the Maton (my brother Greg) and given it to someone who would appreciate it. That bit is pure.

Lyrically, it's a slight stretch of my living circumstances at the time. Once, when I knew another brother was in the audience I replaced Purgatory with the name of the street we lived on. He made no comment about it later.
