I thought the guitar riff sounded like a mystery movie and wrote the words along those lines and then a kind of Village of the Damned theme started coming in and took over the chorus.
I had a real thing for the theme of scapegoating at one point. I didn't do it or suffer from it but noted it when I saw it. For a while every song I wrote was on that subject. They had titles like "Thursday's Leper" and "Lower Form". I'd dropped by this stage but this one is a kind of reverberation of them.
It's grund rather than ground in the chorus as it's taken from an old German or Dutch movie about schoolboy gangs. They called their turf "the grund".
lyrics
THE CIRCLE
Bleeding tears today you might run too far
Locked in the shouting away form your mother's car
Watch out, watch out for every pair of eyes
Come down join the circle
Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow
Come down join the circle
Feel the grund explode as we corrode
You should have seen that dero's face
The teacher and the bell come and put you back into your place
Too small for pain and nausea's prize
Come down join the circle
Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow
Come down join the circle
Feel the grund explode as we corrode
Broken fingernails scratch at the wall
Too far gone now to hear your mother's call
The power shuts off and you realise
Come down join the circle
Hear the buises flow watch our tails grow
Come down join the circle
Feel the grund explode as we corrode
