The more I think of it the more I believe it was the song that came before the band name. The term gatekeeper was used a lot in the kind of cultural analysis as a term for controller (of state or media etc). I liked it as it just sounded like the kind of 60s The somethings band name but had that creepy overtone. The song is a portrait of someone who works for the machine but is unaware of it.
We recorded a few versions of this. First was the 4-track one with my sloppy timing. Then we did a tighter backing track at Basement and overdid the vocals, trying for a choral effect but sounding like the Red Army Choir after too many vodkas. A toned down version of that made it on to Cosmic St. If you can find it you can hear one of the veterans-of-Stalingrad versions on the early 80s compilation Leaving Home for the Party on the Roof but I wouldn't recommend it (not for that song, anyway).
As sloppy as the timing was on the original whenever I returned to it it had an instant appeal for me. The vocals were more relaxed which made them work better as the kind of Gregorian chant sound I wanted. The guitar sound was darker and as I was playing it with a delay going in I wasn't over accentuating the part. It felt right. We never tried it again because it also felt old by the next recording we did. Still haunted me so here it is again.
